Equipment, contd.

Alti-variometer

All pilots of all types of aircraft flying in UK airspace are obliged by Law to fly in accordance with Air Law and with due regard to airspace restrictions and conditions. This instrument is essential for flying in accordance with the Exemption that allows paramotoring within UK airspace. It monitors both altitude and rate of climb or sink at any given moment in flight. Owing to airspace restrictions over the UK, one must be able to know one's height according to recognised base settings, such as altitude above sea level (called QNH), flight level  (FL) according to International Standard barometric pressure setting of 1013.2 Millibars , and other parameters such as height above the take-off field (QFE).

Current manufacturers of these instruments include Brauniger, Renschler, Digifly and Flytech. Some pilots also utilize GPS systems, and there are companies developing combined instruments covering most aspects of both Alti-vario and GPS, along with tachometer, cylinder head temperature gauge (CHT) and distance to goal information, map display, etc.

Head protection

Although crash helmets are found in a multitude of styles and fit for a plethora of purposes, it is recommended that a helmet bearing the EU Safetly mark EN966 is used. These are designed specifically for flight, and as such are suited for the purpose better than, say, motorcycle helmets. This having been said, there is room for creativity and ingenuity in modifying the helmet to incorporate a fixing for a camcorder, or a strobe light, for example.

Ear protection is also of paramount importance; whether one uses in-ear plugs or whole ear surrounding headphones. The latter can be acquired with provision for communication via VHF or PMRS radios, if one flies with others or in contact with those on the ground.
